A shocking number of investment funds has been underperforming (their) benchmarks (usually an index) over the past 10 years. Especially equity funds are poor performers, both before and after fees. Of equity mutual funds, 73% is underperforming before fees. Deduct your annual fees and that percentage becomes a whopping 88%. Just to make sure you are reading that right: almost 9 out of 10 equity mutual funds are underperforming after costs and fees!
